Reading is a skill many people take for granted, but the act of reading and properly comprehending a text is a complex and interactive process. It requires several different brain functions to work together and most often requires one to puzzle through multiple layers of context and meaning.
Because reading comprehension is so complicated, we can often find ourselves understanding the most basic interpretation of a text, but missing the emotional core or the “big picture.” Or we might just find our brains spinning with no clue at all as to what a text is attempting to convey.
But luckily for everyone who struggles in English classes, on standardized tests, or in daily life, reading comprehension can be improved upon (and it’s never too late to start!). 1.Take a Quick look:
Take a bird’s eye view and find out the overall context of the passage. There is no need to read the whole passage in examination hall where every second is very crucial. Pick questions in which you are sure.
2. Read the Questions First:
In examination hall where time plays a pivotal role, proper strategy plays a crucial role. Do not waste time reading the whole passage, instead start from reading questions first. Once you get the needed lines of the answer in the RC, then compare it with the options given in the question. If you are unable to locate an answer then move to the next question, do not get stuck on any question!! Through this approach, you will be able to find the theme and flow of passage in the shortest span of time.
• Pick out the keywords and then go the passage and locate your answer.
• This reverse approach saves your time.
3. Look out for Vocabulary based questions:
Again, if you are running out of time and thriving for few more marks than Vocabulary based question in Reading Comprehension are the best choice. Even if you don’t have time to go through the passage, you can take chance and pick out the correct word from options alone.
4. What do the authors view in this passage:
Stay away from questions like what is the author’s view in this passage, or what is the author trying to say, as these questions are usually controversial and time-consuming as you need to read and understand the whole passage.
5. Focus:
Focus on the content. Don’t let your mind go away from there. If it starts daydreaming…bring it back into reality. Tell yourself that you have plenty of time to dream after the exam. Else even after you read it completely, you will grasp nothing.
6. Improve reading Speed:
Do not move your lips while reading, it slows you down. Reading Comprehension requires you to be smart and smartness comes from practice.
7. Practice a lot:
“Normally, students who believe themselves to be weak in Reading Comprehension, are unwilling to practice. Most of them try to avoid solving at home. They make a lot of excuses. But remember excuses don’t bring you success. Success won’t be available unless you confront your fears and weaknesses.
